Nominations Open for 2014 Griffith Tidy Towns & Sustainable Community Awards, 2014 Ron Inglis Memorial Tidy Towns Award

Tuesday July 1, 2014

The Griffith City Council Environment & Sustainability Committee is calling on the local business community to submit nominations for the 2014 Griffith Tidy Town & Sustainable Community Awards.

This year, the Griffith Tidy Town & Sustainable Community Awards will recognise businesses in Griffith that implement environmental sustainable practices in their workplace and the efforts they put into maintaining their buildings and gardens.

“On behalf of the Committee, I would like to encourage our local businesses to enter these awards to showcase to the rest of the region how much work is being done in Griffith,” said Councillor Pat Cox, committee member.

“Throughout the year, local businesses play an important role in the environmental sustainability practices they implement and as such their efforts deserve acknowledgement,” Cr Cox added.

The Griffith City Council Environment & Sustainability Committee is a local community organisation that promotes sustainable communities through beautification projects, environmental conservation activities and town pride awareness programs.

If you would like to enter your business or nominate another business, nomination forms for the 2014 Griffith Tidy Town & Sustainable Community Awards can be downloaded from the Griffith City Council Website or click on http://www.griffith.nsw.gov.au/cp_themes/default/page.asp?p=DOC-IST-12-85-67.

Residents who continually dedicate themselves to keeping Griffith tidy will be recognised this year as nominations get underway for the 2014 Ron Inglis Memorial Tidy Towns Award.

Griffith City Council's Environment & Sustainability Committee is calling for nominations to be submitted by Friday July 18, 2014. The winner and any potential highly commended recipients will be presented with the awards at the Volunteer’s Morning Tea on Monday August 4, 2014 at Griffith Regional Theatre during Local Government Week.

Ron Inglis was a long serving member of the Tidy Towns Group in Griffith and he worked tirelessly to promote the Tidy Towns image within the community. Council’s Environment & Sustainability Committee developed the Ron Inglis Memorial Tidy Towns Award in 2010 to acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of local individuals and groups who have made positive contributions to the local environment.

“Many community members and organisations are involved in activities each year that help clean, beautify, and protect our community, making Griffith proud,” said Councillor Pat Cox, Chair of Council's Environment & Sustainability Committee. “It is only fitting that these residents are recognised in honour of a man who was also equally dedicated to keeping Griffith tidy.”

Activities that will earn nominations for this year’s award include picking up rubbish, conducting environmental education, tree planting, collection of statistics (such as bird watching), and removal of noxious weeds among other activities.
