Griffith Deputy Mayor Doug Curran Re-Elected for Another Year

Thursday September 25, 2014

Griffith's Deputy Mayor Doug Curran was re-elected into the position at an ordinary meeting of Council held on Tuesday September 23, 2014.
Councillor Curran was re-elected by a vote of 6 to 5 against Councillor Dino Zappacosta. This is Councillor Curran’s second consecutive year as Deputy Mayor. Councillor Zappacosta served 11 of his 25 years on Council as Deputy Mayor.
Cr Curran said he was delighted to be back in the role to continue working on achieving objectives which include fostering the relationship between Council and the Griffith Business Chamber, encouraging younger people to join Council, and relocating the Western Riverina Intermodal Freight terminal to a new site outside the Griffith CBD.
“I’m delighted to be re-elected as I have thoroughly enjoyed the past 12 months and I have received positive feedback from the community, my fellow Councillors and Council staff,” said Councillor Curran, who is an area manager for a multinational logistics company. “I look forward to the next 12 months and continuing to work in supporting the Mayor to bring about positive outcomes for our city. I also hope that I can be a role model for younger people in our community to consider joining Council in any capacity whether it’s volunteering or as a Councillor so that we can have a great cross section of community representatives,” Councillor Curran added.
Mayor John Dal Broi welcomed Councillor Curran’s re-election as Deputy Mayor, saying the two have worked well together in the past year.
“Doug has performed very well in the role over the past 12 months and brings a fresh perspective to the role. We now have another 12 months to work hard together on some great goals for our city,” Mayor Dal Broi said.
The position of Deputy Mayor is elected by the members of the Council annually while the Mayor is popularly elected every four years. For more information, please visit www.griffith.nsw.gov.au or call Council on 6962 8100.
