Flower Power 2014 Opens Friday October 3 2014 at Griffith Regional Art Gallery

Tuesday September 30, 2014

More than 70 creative and visually stunning artworks from residents around the region have been submitted for the seventh annual Flower Power community exhibition.

Flower Power 2014 opens at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery this Friday October 3 and runs until Sunday October 27, 2014. The entries incorporate a range of mediums including painting, drawing, mixed media photography and sculpture from a diverse range of backgrounds and ages. The youngest entry is from a student in preschool and the oldest is from a local resident in his 70s, said Liana Magrath, Coordinator at the Art Gallery.

“The entries are as beautiful as ever with local residents demonstrating their amazing range of creativity and flair,” Ms Magrath said. “We are thrilled that this annual exhibition resonates with our community and we look forward to showing these works to the public.”

Flower Power will officially open at 6pm with the Nancy Sainty encouragement awards—developed to honour the memory of keen gardener and avid painter Nancy Sainty—to be announced during the evening. The awards, donated by Brian and Lyndsay Sainty, include a $200 art supplies voucher for one high school student entrant and a $100 art supplies voucher for a primary school student entrant.

“We received several worthy contenders from students for the awards this year to be judged by the Sainty family,” Ms Magrath said.

Two workshops will be held at the gallery during the exhibition. A free yarn-bombing workshop with Jo Nathan will be held from 10am to 2pm on Saturday October 11.

“We will yarn-bomb the trees at the front of the gallery with crochet flowers and leaves. We ask members of the public to help out by making some of these crochet flowers and leaves or small pom-poms that look like flowers prior to the workshop,” Ms Magrath said.

Nana Ohnesorge will conduct an adult portrait painting workshop from 10am to 4pm on Saturday October 25.

“Nana is a much loved guest of the gallery and frequent visitor to Griffith. She excels at teaching people how to paint portraits using a photograph of a loved one,” Ms Magrath explained. “Nana’s portraits of members of the local indigenous community will be shown in her exhibition which will be held after Flower Power.”
