Council obtains $247,000 NSW Government grant for Waste Drop Off Centre

Tuesday June 24, 2014

Griffith City Council is pleased to announce it has received a $247,000 NSW Government grant, which will be used towards the design and construction of the Griffith Household Problem Waste Drop Off Centre.

The grant funding falls under the NSW Improved Systems for Household Program Wastes - Community Recycling Centres Grant Program, aimed at establishing infrastructure that will be used for community recycling centres or similar mobile services.

The funding will help Council move forward with the design phase of the Problem Waste Drop Off Centre, which will be built as part of Griffith’s new Waste Transfer Station at the Tharbogang Waste Management Centre (WMC).

“We are excited to have been successful with our grant application. This funding will help Council move forward with the design phase of the Drop Off Centre, including issuing tenders for construction in the near future,” said David Tull, Director Utilities at Griffith City Council. “The Drop Off Centre and the Waste Transfer Station are projected to cost in excess of $1M to build and are scheduled to begin operation by late 2015.”

The Drop Off Centre will be the entry point for residents to deliver potentially hazardous household chemicals that could cause harm to humans and the environment if not disposed of correctly. Items include solvents, floor care products, ammonia based cleaners, fluorescent globes and tubes, paint-related products, pesticides and herbicides, poisons, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, pool chemicals, acids and alkalis, car batteries, motor oils and fuels fluids.

The annual average weight of waste accepted at Tharbogang in 2013 was around 24,000 tons and shows no signs of decreasing, Mr Tull said. The objective of the station is to minimise waste placed in landfills and maximise recycling and site safety. It is designed to accept waste from light vehicles such as cars, utes, and towed trailers.

A detailed operations and concept design report developed for the Griffith Waste Transfer Station (incorporating the House Problem Waste Drop Off Centre) is available at Council’s website, www.griffith.nsw.gov.au.
