Local Residents Encouraged to Join National Garage Sale Trail

Monday October 20, 2014

Three years ago co-founders Andrew Valder (left) and Darryl Nichols came up with the idea to hold a day of garage sales in their local area inspired by sustainability and the opportunity to make new community connections. Today this grassroots idea has blossomed into Garage Sale Trail, the biggest community and sustainability event in
Australia.

Local residents who love to spring clean their homes and host or attend garage sales can join thousands of people across Australia with the same passions when National Garage Sale Trail Day is held this Saturday October 25.

Griffith City Council is encouraging residents to be part of this national event—aimed at fostering sustainability, community, commerce and fun—by registering their sales through the National Garage Sale Trail Day link: https://www.garagesaletrail.com.au/register/sale.

“The expression ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ has never been more true given the growing success of the National Garage Sale Trail Day in recent years,” said Councillor Bill Lancaster, Chairperson of Council’s Environment and Sustainability Committee. “We encourage locals to get into the spirit of this wonderful national program by registering their garage sales for this Saturday.”

Over the past 3 years, the Garage Sale Trail has enlisted more than 100 councils across the country, 7,000 garage sales, 360,000 participants, 35,000 sellers, and an online audience of more than 2 million people.

“One of the great aspects of this program is that residents in the Griffith region can share their love of spring cleaning, garage sales, their community and the environment on a national level, knowing that thousands of residents across the country are cleaning and selling on the same day,” Cr Lancaster added.

Garage Sale Trail is a not-for-profit mission that works hand-in-hand with government to inspire social and environmental change. By uniting communities around Australia to hold garage sales on the same day, Garage Sale Trail organisers are working to promote recycling, reducing waste to landfill, enabling new neighbourly connections, providing a platform for fundraising, inspiring creativity and stimulating local economies.
