Unleash Your Inner Scientist

Wednesday February 18, 2015

Griffith City Library is encouraging children across the region to get curious with the introduction of their new science based boxes, Kurious Kids with thanks to a REAPing Rewards grant from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR).

The Kurious Kids science boxes is an initiative by Library staff to get local children involved in the sciences, with each box providing everything needed to conduct their own in home experiments.

There are 18 boxes available to borrow covering 9 topics such as Water, Sounds, Magnets, Light & Colour, Microscope, Mini World, Astronomy, Human Body and Weather.

Joint Library Manager, Christine DelGigante said she is hoping these boxes will provide free play based learning for children and their carers.

“Here at the Library we are constantly looking for ways to engage children and feed their thirst for knowledge,” said Mrs DelGigante.

“The creation of these Kurious Kids boxes does just that while allowing children to conduct safe science experiments in a fun way. Each kit comes complete with easy to follow instructions.”

Experiments include creating a rainbow by splitting light, make a tornado in a bottle and make a temporary magnet.

“We think Kurious Kids will be a hit with kids and kids alike and provides a great free way to entertain the whole family,” said Mrs DelGigante.

“We will be making some of these boxes available to residents in Yenda, Darlington Point & Coleambally through our Mobile Library Service – so why not pop down next time we visit your town and get scientific!”
