Keep NSW Beautiful Assessor Visits Griffith August 7 and 8

Griffith City Council’s Environment & Sustainability Committee is excited to host Keep NSW Beautiful Tidy Towns Assessor Peter Ryall who will visit Griffith on Thursday and Friday August 7 and 8. Griffith City Councillor Pat Cox, member of Council’s Environment & Sustainability Committee and Renae Foggiato, Environmental Health Officer at Council, will host Mr Ryall as he tours several locations in the area that have been nominated as entries in the Keep NSW Beautiful 2014 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards program.

Council’s Environment & Sustainability Committee has made the following nominations for The Keep NSW Beautiful 2014 Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards program:

Overall Award: The City of Griffith. The Overall Town Award is focused on a holistic view of Griffith. The submission is divided into categories of Beautification/Town Pride, Environmental Initiatives & Cultural Heritage and Community Partnerships.

Community Actions & Partnerships: Griffith CareVan. The Griffith CareVan project is a community-based response to reach out to people in Griffith and the surrounding community who live in poverty and who are vulnerable to homelessness, hunger and other forms of disadvantage.

Conservations Partnerships: Mirrool Creek Restoration Project. This joint project between Murrumbidgee Irrigation and Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Authority aims to restore Mirrool Creek by increasing water efficiency and quality, increase and link corridors of remnant vegetation, increase biodiversity, remove noxious weeds, identify cultural heritage and engage stakeholders.

Cultural Heritage Award: Women’s Land Army in Griffith1942-1945. The Women’s Land Army in Griffith, 1942-1945, is a project that involves the research, recording and exhibition of the work and service of the Women’s Land Army members.

Environmental Education Award: Dorothy Waide Early Childhood Centre. Dorothy Waide Early Childhood Centre has created a natural play space over time; one that has engaged children, educators, families and community members.

Sustainable Business Award: De Bortoli Wines. De Bortoli Wines is a third-generation, family-owned wine company that has incorporated sustainable practices into all aspects of the wine making process. These practices now play a part in all decisions, ranging from wine production to packaging.

Young Legends Award – 2nd Griffith Scouts’ Group 2014. The 2nd Griffith Scouts’ Group of 2014 is a youth group that has ongoing community involvement through events such as Clean Up Australia Day, Citrus Sculptures and Anzac Day ceremonies.

Since 1981, the Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Program has been rewarding and recognising the civic pride, community spirit and environmental commitment of regional communities across NSW. The awards celebrate achievements of communities who implement projects to improve their town’s natural and built environments.
