Spotlight on Griffith City Council Services and People During Local Government Week 2014

Monday July 28, 2014

Local Government Week 2014 is just around the corner and Griffith City Council invites residents to celebrate a week of events planned for the local community.

Held August 4-10, Local Government Week is an opportunity to highlight all the important services that councils provide by involving the community in fun and informative events.

Griffith Mayor John Dal Broi said Griffith is proud to join other councils around the state to engage with and give back to their communities.

“I think it’s important for councils to shine a light on all the services they provide to the community as often people are surprised by the depth and breadth of what a council does,” Councillor Dal Broi said.“While many people are aware that councils manage rates, roads and rubbish, the diversity of their work often goes unrecognised. During Local Government Week, Griffith City Council will host a variety of events and services to help further engage with our local residents,” Cr. Dal Broi added.

Local Government Week starts off with the ever-popular annual morning tea for council volunteers on Monday August 4.

“The morning tea is a special opportunity for us to thank and recognise the many residents who volunteer on Council Committees and provide us with valuable input from our community,” said Brett Stonestreet, General Manager at Griffith City Council.

All local residents are invited to attend a free movie screening of Last Vegas at 11am on the same Monday at the Griffith Regional Theatre.

The Mayor, Council’s Senior Management and Councillors have been invited to attend a morning tea hosted by the Griffith Seniors’ Club on Tuesday August 5 to provide important Council news and updates to the members of the club.

Another popular service held during Local Government Week is Animal Microchipping at a reduced rate. The Griffith Pound will offer the service for the discounted price of $20 on Wednesday and Thursday, August 6 and 7. Bookings are essential and residents are encouraged to call 6962 8100 to make an appointment.

The Griffith City Library will mark the week by hosting a display featuring photos of council employees and their recommended books to read. Also, a tri-sports challenge of basketball, volleyball and badminton, will be held on Wednesday at Westend Stadium with Griffith High School, Wade High School and Marian Catholic College vying for the Tri-Sport Shield, which will be presented at 2.30pm.

The final event for Local Government Week will occur on a separate date in September – the Pioneer Park Museum Mini Action Day for local Year 4 students on Friday September 5. The students will be able to participate in many activities including a session about safety around dogs presented by Council Rangers.
