Draft Flood Study On Exhibition for Public Input

Monday July 28, 2014

A draft flood study that is part of a five-step management process for the local floodplain area has been placed on exhibition by Griffith City Council for public input.

Titled Griffith Main Drain J and Mirrool Creek Flood Study, the report was authored by consultants BMT WBM Ltd and is available on Council’s website www.griffith.nsw.gov.au. Copies are also available at Council’s administration building at 1 Benerembah Street and at the Griffith City Library.

Residents are invited to read the draft study and make written submissions, which will be received up until 4pm on Friday, August 15.

“The draft flood study defines the nature and extent of the flood problems in the Main Drain J catchment as well as Mirrool Creek catchments within the Griffith Local Government area with respect to all historical flood events, including the March 2012 flood event. The study provides a basis for the investigation of the flood mitigation options,” said Councillor Bill Lancaster, Chair of Council’s Floodplain Management Committee.

Council’s Engineering Design & Approvals Manager Graham Gordon said the study deals with the hydrology and hydraulics of a flood event. “In essence, this is the respective study of the rainfall and runoff process to evaluate peak flows and volumes of water and the study of water flow in waterways to evaluate flow parameters such as water level and velocity,” Mr Gordon said.

The draft Flood Study represents the completion of stages 1 and 2 of the Floodplain Management process, as per the requirements of the NSW Floodplain Development Manual. The stages are:

1. Data Collection
2. Flood Study
3. Floodplain Risk Management Study
4. Floodplain Risk Management Plan, and
5. Plan Implementation.

The Stage 3 and 4 reports are scheduled to be completed and put on exhibition in March or April of 2015 for public input.

“For the fifth stage, Council will explore funding options from the State and Commonwealth governments for the implementation of the recommended flood mitigation measures,” Mr Gordon said.
