GET READY TO PERFORM - GRASS ROOTS UNDER 30’S OPEN MIC IS BACK

Entries are now open for the Grass Roots Under 30s Open Mic competition at the Griffith Regional Theatre. The music competition, aimed at discovering and promoting the exceptional talent of young musicians, is open to individuals and groups under the age of 30, and provides a platform for performers across all music genres and styles, including solo artists, bands, producers, and DJs.
Taking place on Sunday 30 July at the Theatre each contestant will be given a 10-to-15-minute slot, about 2 or 3 songs, allowing them to show off their skills on stage. Participants have the freedom to perform either cover songs or original compositions, allowing for a diverse range of performances.
Now in its fourth year, Grass Roots has seen many talented young musicians from across the region take the opportunity to gain experience and exposure through the program. Some have gone on to pursue a profession in music by writing and releasing songs, formal training through education and playing at festivals.
Griffith Regional Theatre Manager, Marg Andreazza, said “Grass Roots will be held in the Theatre's auditorium to give the performers an idea of what it is like to perform in a professional setting. We want young emerging artists to have opportunities that help them start off in the industry, show off their skills to the community and hopefully lead them to bigger and better things.”
The competition will be judged by Grass Roots founder and local musician Ben Ceccato, along with the directors of A Day in the Orchard (ADITO) music festival, Luke Piccolo and Bonnie Owen, who have been judging the event since its beginning in 2019. This year the competition will also welcome Ken Dachi from Halisi Music to the judging panel.
The Grass Roots Under 30s Open Mic has three prizes to be won:
Best Original Song: The recipient of this award will have the unique opportunity to engage in a one-on-one mentoring session with a seasoned musician, songwriter, or producer. Thanks to the generous support of SongMakers APRA AMCOS, the mentoring session may be conducted virtually via Zoom.
ADITO Award: The winner of this award will perform a set at A Day in the Orchard music festival on Saturday 7 October and will receive a $500 payment for their performance.
Judges' Choice Award: A cash prize of $250 will be awarded to the act that impresses the panel of judges with their exceptional talent and stage presence.
In addition to these exciting prizes, all Grass Roots performers will receive a complimentary ticket to attend the A Day in the Orchard music festival, allowing them to witness other incredible performances and immerse themselves in a day of musical celebration.
