Social Media House Rules

Griffith City Council has several social media channels - Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. We use our platforms to update you on our work and news from across the Local Government Area (LGA), as well as to listen and to your views.

To ensure our channels are a place where everyone can engage in safe, respectful discussions, we have a simple set of social media 'house rules'. Our house rules outline what service you can expect from us on social media, as well as the behaviour we expect from you.

These standards apply across all our social media channels and those who breach them may be blocked and reported.

These rules have been created to foster a respectful and peaceful platform where our community can engage in meaningful and constructive conversation with Griffith City Council.

We are committed to upholding and promoting the following principles of social media engagement:

Openness: Our social media platforms are places where anyone can share and discuss issues that are relevant to our Council and the community we represent and serve.

Relevance: We will ensure our social media platforms are kept up to date with informative content about our Council and community.

Accuracy: The content we upload onto our social media platforms and any other social media platform will be a source of truth for our Council and community and we will prioritise the need to correct inaccuracies when they occur.

Respect: Our social media platforms are safe spaces. We will uphold and promote the behavioural standards contained in our Social Media Policy and our Council’s code of conduct when using our social media platforms.

When participating, posting, commenting or otherwise on Griffith City Council's social media channels (including channels by Council-owned facilities) we ask that conversations are kept respectful, constructive and on topic. While we want our community to feel heard, our staff who moderate our social media platforms should not have to deal with abuse, inappropriate content and will take action to ban repeat offenders. If a person uploads content that is removed or ‘hidden’ on three (3) occasions, that person may be blocked or banned from Council’s social media platform. If the individual has been inappropriate towards moderators, there will be no warning, and a ban will be immediately put in place. This is to ensure the safety of our employees.

Content that is deemed to be inappropriate, disrespectful or defamatory include:

  • Comments not typically related to the site or post being commented upon.
  • Profane language or content.
  • Comments spreading false or misleading information.
  • Engagement in deliberate 'trolling' or spamming.
  • Content that promotes, fosters or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race or creed, colour, age, religion, gender, marital status, status with regard to public assistance, national origin, physical or mental disability or sexual orientation.
  • Comments that abuse, harass or threaten others, including Griffith City Council staff and Councillors.
  • Sexual content or links to sexual content.
  • Solicitations of commerce.
  • Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity.
  • Information that may tend to compromise the safety or security of the public.
  • Content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party.
  • Providing the personal information of another person(s).
  • Speculate or comment on legal matters.
  • Include materials that breach the intellectual property rights of others.

Griffith City Council reserves the right to immediately remove offensive, discriminatory or defamatory comments without consultation if necessary and update the House Rules as required to continue to provide a respectful and welcoming place for robust, constructive discussion on Council-related topics.
