We are Local Government

Local Government Week is designed to showcase the work councils do in their communities, including the wide variety of services they provide.

The week aims to help move the conversation beyond roads, rates and rubbish, to the important and far-reaching role councils play as the hubs of their community. As a sector we are responsible for pools, parks and playgrounds, libraries, local festivals and lighting, cemeteries, community infrastructure and much more.

Monday 3 to Sunday 9 August 2026

National Tree Planting Day

Council is encouraging residents to get involved in a community tree planting day beginning at 8.30am on Sunday 2 August 2026 as part of Local Government Week.

The event will take place on Citrus Road at the Gilmartin Drive intersection, where volunteers will help plant native trees and shrubs to enhance the local environment and create a greener future for Griffith.

Community members are invited to gather at Citrus Road near the Gilmartin Drive intersection from 8.30am to register before joining in the planting activities.

Residents of all ages are welcome to participate. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own gloves and hand tools, as well as a hat, sunscreen, closed-in shoes and water bottle.

To assist with event planning, pre-registration is encouraged via the online volunteer registration form. However, community members are also welcome to register on the day and take part.

Griffith Day Tour with Visit Griffith

The Griffith Tourism Hub will be offering a Griffith Day Tour on Monday, 3 August. Meet at the Griffith Tourism Hub and be introduced to the Griffith Tourism Team, before boarding the bus for a Town Tour and stop at the Griffith Regional Theatre to learn about the soft-sculptured curtain. A visit to Catania Fruit Salad farm for a guided farm tour and a light lunch will follow, and finish the day at Morella Grove olive orchard.

The day will run from 9am to approx. 4pm. A small fee of $15 will apply to help cover catering costs.

Bookings are essential and will close at 12pm on Friday 31 July (for catering purposes).

Volunteer's Lunch

This year, Griffith City Council is using the week to say thank you to the selfless volunteers who support Council and to highlight some of the services and facilities the community enjoys.

Council will hold a Thank You Lunch to honour the unwavering commitment of our facility volunteers and numerous Committee members who generously give their time.

A special Local Government Week Council Cafe will be held during Local Government week. We will have lots of giveaways, and as always will be on hand to listen to any concerns or ideas you may have.
