Companion Animal Fees & Charges (Microchipping and Registration)

A lifetime registration fee for your cat or dog is payable in NSW.

Reduced registration fees are eligible for de-sexed animals and for pension card holders.

Registration fees are remitted by Council to the State Government. Visit the Office of Local Government's pet registration fees webpage for more information. 

All fees may be subject to change without notice by the NSW State Government.

*An eligible pensioner is a person in receipt of the aged pension, war widow pension or disability pension. If you are unsure whether you are an eligible pensioner, please contact your local council.

Surrender fees - DOG or CAT

  • Dog or Cat: $ Nil

Please note: Whilst there is no fee to surrender your animal, surrenders are by appointment only with the Animal Rehoming Officer. Contact 1300 176 077 to book an appointment.

Impounding fees

  • Dog or Cat impounding fee – 1st day: $69.00
  • Dog or Cat impounding fee per additional day: $39.00
  • Dog or Cat impounded within a 12-month period: = DOUBLE INITIAL IMPOUNDING FEE: $138.00

Adoption fees

Fees include desexing, microchipping, 1st vaccination, and registration

  • Male Dog:       $420
  • Female Dog:   $480
  • Male Cat:        $260
  • Female Cat:    $320

Cat trap hire

Cat traps can be hired out.
 
  • Deposit: $80.00
  • Hire Fee (per week): $39.00

Under the provisions of the Companion Animals Act 1998, cats within NSW are considered to have no boundaries and are free to roam.

Microchipping fees

  • Dog or Cat (by a Animal Rehoming Staff only): $26.00

  • Litter of pups (3 or more): $18.55 per animal

Are there any refunds for lifetime registration fees?

No.

In NSW, registration is required once only and is valid for the animal's lifetime.
