Local artists invited to submit works for Community Art Exhibition
Published on 24 March 2025
Griffith Regional Art Gallery is inviting local artists and designers to take part in this year’s Community Art Exhibition, Bazaar.
The exhibition will be held during May and June, with the name inspired by the Melbourne fashion boutique, Bazaar of South Yarra, which was owned by renowned fashion designer Ross Weymouth.
Weymouth, and his partner John Claringbold, created an enormous range of designer gowns, bridal wear and race wear, and the Gallery now holds many of these pieces as part of the Couture Collection. The Community Exhibition at the gallery will feature some pieces from the Collection as well as mementoes and stories of their careers as fashion designers.
Local artists and designers are encouraged to create new works based on the theme of Bazaar, inspired by the works of Claringbold and Weymouth, or Australian fashion in general.
Gallery Coordinator Raymond Wholohan said that it had been several years since pieces from the Couture Collection were last displayed, making it the perfect opportunity to showcase them.
"We thought it would be great to use these pieces and fashion as a whole, as inspiration for artists to create their own fashion-themed works,” he said.
“Exhibition items can be anything, they may be paintings, textiles, garments, or even digital works or performance works. We’re excited to see what people come up with.”
In addition to the exhibition, a Gala Fashion Parade will be held at Whitton Malthouse on Saturday, 3 May 2025, showcasing more of the Couture Collection. This will be the last opportunity to see these gowns modelled, due to their age and fragility of materials. Tickets to this event are available from the Malthouse.
To enter an artwork into the Bazaar Exhibition, there is a small fee of $5 per artwork and they must be delivered to the gallery before 24 April 2025. The exhibition will run from 3 May to 15 June 2025. More details are available via the Gallery website: griffithregionalartgallery.com.au or by calling 6962 8338.
