Griffith City Council has endorsed the draft Griffith Water Prospectus and it is now on public exhibition, with community members encouraged to review the document and provide feedback.

The Griffith Water Prospectus outlines Council’s commitment to sustainable water management and highlights the critical role irrigation plays in the region’s economic success. It showcases Griffith’s proactive approach to managing water infrastructure and positions the city as a leader in responsible water stewardship.

Griffith City Councillor, Shari Blumer, who is also the National President of the Murray Darling Association (MDA), initiated the Notice of Motion that led to the Prospectus, stressing its importance in lobbying efforts.

“This Prospectus is about telling our story, how we manage our water assets, the value they bring to our community and why Griffith deserves a seat at the table when decisions about water policy are made,” she said.

"Water is at the heart of Griffith’s economy, environment and community. This Prospectus gives us the facts and evidence to take to ministers and decision-makers, showing that Griffith doesn’t just use water, we manage it responsibly and efficiently for the benefit of the entire region. It’s about securing our future, protecting our industries and ensuring local voices are heard in every water policy discussion.”

The Griffith Water Prospectus provides a comprehensive overview of the city’s water infrastructure, stewardship responsibilities and policy positions. It outlines Council’s opposition to water buybacks and advocates for long-term, transparent and efficient water allocation within the Murray-Darling Basin. The document highlights Griffith’s vulnerability to water recovery policies, its leadership in irrigation efficiency and its commitment to climate adaptation, environmental protection and collaboration across government and industry. It also supports alternatives to buybacks and calls for greater local government involvement in water policy decisions.

Comments or submissions can be made at Council policies and plans on exhibition | GCC and will be received up to 4pm, 12 September 2025.
