Local students give Scenic Hill Mural a name

Griffith’s striking new mural on the Scenic Hill water reservoir now has a name. The name, Taste of Griffith, was selected as the winning entry thanks to the creativity of local school students.
Griffith City Council recently invited local students to take part in a naming competition, asking them to come up with a title that captured the spirit and story of the mural. Many imaginative entries were received, making the judging process a difficult task.
Mayor Doug Curran and mural artist HEESCO reviewed all the entries and were impressed by the thought and originality on display. In the end, the winning name, Taste of Griffith, was submitted by two students, Kandice Khouri from Griffith North Public School and Chelsea Quarisa from Griffith East Public School.
Mayor Doug Curran said it was excellent to see young people getting involved.
“It was fantastic to see so many students taking part. The ideas were creative, clever and really showed how much pride our young people have in our community,” he said.
“There were so many great entries, it wasn’t easy to choose a winner. But Taste of Griffith really stood out as it captures the flavour of who we are as a city and what the mural represents.”
The mural itself is a major feature on the 9ML Water Tank overlooking Scenic Hill and celebrates Griffith’s rich culture, diversity, agriculture and First Nations heritage.
Completed by HEESCO in 2024, it’s become a much-loved addition to the local landscape and now, with the help of our students, it has a name that reflects our community’s story.
