Griffith Australia Day winners announced

Congratulations to Dr Narayanan Jayachandran (Dr Jaya) who has been named Griffith’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year.

Dr Jaya was presented with the top Australia Day honour on Sunday, 26 January 2025 during the official ceremony, held at the Griffith Regional Theatre.

He was honoured for his dedication to Griffith residents, ensuring his patients always receive quality, compassionate care as well as volunteering at many events within our community.

Griffith Mayor, Doug Curran congratulated Dr Jaya and the other award recipients. He also acknowledged the 48 new citizens.

“Congratulations to Dr Jaya on being named Griffith’s Australia Day Citizen of the Year. Dr Jaya’s commitment to the health and well-being of our community is truly remarkable, and his dedication to volunteering makes him an outstanding role model for us all,” Councillor Curran said.

“I also want to congratulate all of this year’s award recipients and nominees. Each plays an essential role in making Griffith a better place.”

Winners of the 2024 Griffith Australia Day awards:

  • Citizen of the Year – Dr Narayanan Jayachandran
  • Young Citizen of the Year – Shirine Nehme
  • Community Project of the Year - Griffith Aboriginal Medical Service Chronic Care Team Elders Portrait Exhibition
  • Environmental Citizen of the Year  – Lachlan Weymouth
  • Local Hero Award – Michael Borg
  • Junior Sportsperson of the Year – Lahni Mogliotti
  • Sports Team of the Year – Tharbogang Public School 4x100m Mixed Relay Team  
  • Senior Sportsperson of the Year – Nicole Taylor
  • Club person of the Year – Robyn Meehan
  • Griffith City Sports Councils sportsperson of the year award recipient – Andrew Sinclair

“Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate individuals who make a difference. Your efforts ensure that we continue to celebrate the incredible people who contribute to the growth and success of our town,” said Councillor Curran.  

“I would also like to thank those in our community who took the time to complete the nomination form to ensure these residents could be acknowledged today.”
