Council to retain operation of GRALC Gym following community feedback

Council has resolved to retain operational control of the gymnasium at the Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre (GRALC), following strong community feedback and a positive assessment of the gym’s current performance.
At the Ordinary Meeting held Tuesday 13 May 2025, Council noted the findings of a community survey undertaken as part of the broader service review of GRALC, which sought views on the future operation of the gym, including whether it should be leased to a private operator.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said community response made it clear that residents value the current model of Council operation and the unique service it provides.
“This gym has been a trusted part of our community for more than 30 years,” Mayor Curran said.
“It’s more than just a fitness space, it offers a friendly, inclusive environment for people of all ages and abilities and it plays an important role in rehabilitation, health and wellbeing, especially in partnership with the pool facilities.”
The GRALC Gymnasium Survey Results Report indicated strong community support for the current model. Survey participants highlighted the value of the supervised environment, experienced staff and integration with the aquatic facilities.
The gym has consistently recorded a modest operating surplus and contributes to the overall efficiency of the GRALC facility by offsetting managerial and administrative costs. Council also retains control over fees and charges, ensuring accessibility remains a priority.
Council had considered the potential for leasing the gym to a private operator, including assessing the feasibility of 24-hour access and required facility modifications. However, preliminary analysis revealed such upgrades, including separate amenities and a new entry/exit point, could run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and would significantly affect financial viability.
Mayor Curran thanked residents for taking part in the consultation process.
“Council will now focus on further refining and improving gym operations to ensure it continues to meet community needs and remains financially sustainable.” Councillor Curran said.
