Community urged to follow five things before 9pm routine

Griffith City Council is urging residents to prioritise home security following increased reports of suspicious activity across our community.
There are growing concerns about individuals allegedly scoping properties and the use of drones to survey homes. These reports have been referred to Griffith Police, who are actively monitoring the situation.
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said Council is committed to supporting local police efforts and reminding residents to take proactive steps to secure their homes and look out for one another.
“We’re hearing too many reports of people behaving suspiciously and residents feeling uneasy, and rightly so. We shouldn’t feel unsafe in our own homes, but with these contemptible people around, we need to be more vigilant,” Councillor Curran said.
“We’re not here to cause panic, but we do want the community to act. Lock up, stay alert and speak up. If something doesn’t feel right, report it.”
In partnership with the Murrumbidgee Police District, Council is encouraging the community to follow the #9PMRoutine - a nightly reminder to ensure your property is safe before going to bed.
Five reminders before you go to bed:
1. Remove valuables from your car
2. Lock up car and house
3. Check CCTV is working
4. Switch on alarm at night (if possible)
5. Report Suspicious Activity 131444
If you know someone who is away on holiday or working long hours, help keep an eye on their property. Small actions, like collecting mail, putting bins out, or checking their front door can make a big difference.
“We don’t want to alarm the community, but we do want people to take this seriously,” Councillor Curran said. “Unfortunately, we can’t stop nefarious characters from wanting what we have worked hard to earn, but we can stop giving them the ability to take our belongings by following these five tips. We are all safer when we work together. Let’s look out for each other.”
