TEXTURE AND COLOUR TO DOMINATE THE ART GALLERY IN DIANE TARR’S TEXTILE WONDERLAND “ONLY JUST BEGUN”

The walls of the Griffith Regional Art Gallery are about to become awash with colour as Diane Tarr’s textiles wonderland, Only Just Begun, is showcased.
Di, a Griffith-based artist, is recognised as one of the Western Riverina’s most prolific and vibrant textile artists. In Di’s artistic career she has dabbled not only with textiles, but also painting, ceramics, mosaic and installation. Di was also the proprietor of the successful Cottage Gallery and is renowned for her own arts practice, and also collaborating with fellow artists in the Griffith area such as the late Veronica Collins, Lisa Taliano, Sue Fordham and others.
For Di, design, colour and form are essential in her textile practice. Di employs drawing and her artist’s diaries to aid her in the intricate designs. Once the artist is happy with her preparatory design drawing - she then labours over the rigorous process of constructing the artwork in her home studio.
Art Gallery Coordinator, Ray Wholohan, said “process and intuition are essential catalysts for Di’s textile practice. I would even go so far as to say that process and intuition are just as relevant as the actual fibres and structure within Di’s artworks.”
“Di has always amazed me with the endurance she commits into her arts practice. She enthusiastically commits countless hours and it is via this commitment that Di will transform our gallery into a wonder for the senses,” Mr Wholohan said.
“Throughout the exhibition, Dianne will hold demonstrations and workshops exploring the practices of tufting and crochet. If any of our patrons are interested in either of these skills, please contact the Gallery,” Gallery’s Public Program Officer Melanie Toscan said.
The exhibition will open at 6pm on Friday 29 September, and all are welcome to attend. It will run from Saturday the 30 September to Sunday 5 November 2023. Gallery hours are Wednesday to Sunday – 10am-5pm and weekends -11am-2pm. For all enquiries contact Griffith Regional Art Gallery on 6962 8338 or gallery@griffith.nsw.gov.au
