Survival Day Event Back In 2023

Wednesday, 18 Jan 2023

Survival Day Event Back In 2023 Griffith’s Survival Day is back and it’s going to be even bigger and better this year!
Held on 26 January 2023 (Australia Day) at the Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre, the event is open to all.
Join Griffith City Council and Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council for this all-inclusive family event being held to show respect for our First Nations Wiradjuri People.
The community is invited to enjoy free entry into the pool and a host of cultural activities including dancing, singing, a paint and yarn session, and stalls. A free BBQ lunch will be available along with live music from local artists and a photo booth.
Finessemane, or Jayden Oakley, is a Yamatji Noongar man with bloodlines from the West Coast of Australia and Temora will be emcee for the event. He has an impressive half a million followers across his socials.
The first Aboriginal Citizen of the Year Awards Ceremony will be held, thanks to the Griffith Local Aboriginal Lands Council.
Griffith Local Aboriginal Land Council Chairperson Ms Vickie Louise Simpson and CEO, Stephen Young are encouraging locals to attend.
“This event provides an opportunity to acknowledge and learn about our past so indigenous and non-indigenous people can formulate stronger relationships,” Ms Simpson said.
Mr Young said, “Yes it’s about respect, but it’s also about understanding, learning and working together for a better future for us all.”
Griffith Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran, said Australia Day was a good chance for us all to reflect on our history, its highs and its lows.
“I’m really pleased to see this event is back this year,” Councillor Curran said.
“It is important that we create Nationalism by celebrating diversity, identity, creativity and solidarity. I urge everyone to come along and join in what should be a wonderful cultural day.
“Last year’s was such a great day. I invite everyone to come along and join in the fun.”
Free buses will be available for pick-ups and drop-offs (on rotation every hour) from 11am-5pm. Commencing from Dave Taylor Park, Kubank Park (Parkinson Crescent) and Yawarra Park (Three Ways).
This event will run from 11am to 5pm, with the official proceedings taking place at 1.30pm.
