Supersized Open Day Planned For ‘our Westend’- New Regional Sports Complex
Friday, 14 Oct 2022

Funding of $50,000 was secured to hold a super-sized open day on Saturday 29 October 2022, which will see a free ‘Come and Try’ day for the Griffith community, and showcasing some of Griffith’s local sports including athletics, basketball, hockey and netball.
Sporting stars from Giants Netball, Sydney Kings & Sydney Flames Basketball, Kookaburras and Hockeyroos Hockey and high-profile track and field athletes will be in attendance on the day, with everyone invited to come along, meet the elite athletes and participate in the free coaching clinics.
Volunteers from Griffith Basketball Association, Griffith Hockey Association, Griffith Netball Association and Little Athletics Griffith will be on-hand, providing a range of fun activities, information and advice on their local competitions.
Mayor, Councillor Doug Curran said this is an excellent opportunity for the local community and visitors alike to spend the day exploring Griffith’s new state-of-the-art sporting facility and trying their hand at a new sport.
“The work being undertaken at Westend will see the area become a state of the art sporting arena, allowing for increased participation from local sporting groups, schools and organisations, as well as providing opportunities to host major local and regional sporting events and carnivals,” said Councillor Curran.
“I would like to invite the community to save the date for October 29 and come along to see what the Precinct will offer – try out some of the sports on offer, meet sporting heroes, and take home some goodies!
“This will be a great opportunity to see and try first hand some of the sports that will be on offer, have a chat to representatives from Griffith Basketball Association, Griffith Hockey Association, Griffith Netball Association, and Griffith Little Athletics. It will be a fun day and not one you will want to miss!” added Councillor Curran.
The Regional Sport Events Funding program supported by the Australia Sports Commission will invest $1.9 million to support Local Government Councils in regional and remote Australia to host sporting events. The program aims to reinvigorate local economies following the impact of Covid-19, engage communities and encourage greater visitation to regional Australia.
Keep an eye out for more information and a full program of events.
The Griffith Regional Sports Complex is a $31.9 million project with funding of $4.5 million from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, $11 million from the NSW Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure Fund and Regional Sport Facility Fund, and $16.4 million from Griffith City Council.
