Sports Centre Records Impressive Volume Of Events Since October 2022 Opening

Friday, 19 May 2023

Sports Centre Records Impressive Volume Of Events Since October 2022 Opening Since its grand opening in October 2022, the Griffith Regional Sports Centre has been buzzing with activity, hosting a remarkable number of sports and community events.
With a total of 1,350 bookings made to date, the centre has become a hub of sporting excellence and community engagement in the region.
Griffith Mayor Doug Curran said the diverse range of events held at the Centre showcases its versatility and commitment to serving the community's needs.
“The bookings include a wide array of local sports associations, training sessions, competition matches, representative matches, talent pathway programs, and various other sporting and community events,” Councillor Curran said.
“The sheer volume of bookings so far just goes to show how much our community needed this facility.”
Local sports associations, such as basketball, netball, athletics, and hockey utilise the centre for their regular activities. Training sessions, which take place 40 times a week, provide athletes with a dedicated space to enhance their skills and fitness levels. Competition matches, held on Wednesdays (netball), Thursdays (basketball), and Saturdays (netball, athletics, and hockey), foster a spirit of healthy competition and community engagement.
Additionally, the centre has been the venue of choice for numerous regional and state-level events. Western Junior League Basketball hosted three rounds plus finals, attracting over 2,500 attendees at each event.
Griffith Basketball Association Gala Day, Regional Hockey Gala Day, Regional Netball Gala Day, and the Region 4 Athletics Carnival, which saw participation from athletics clubs across Southern NSW, have further bolstered the centre’s reputation as a premier sporting venue.
Griffith Regional Sports Centre Manager Ché Jenkins said he is pleased to see the state-of-the-art Centre being so well utilised.
“We’ve certainly been kept busy over the past few months with lots of different sporting events being held here,” he said.
“This new Centre has only been open for just over six months so I anticipate we will only get busier as we work to attract even more events.”
Schools are also utilising the Centre, with 25 school sports bookings per week, including hockey, indoor soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball, and badminton. The centre has also hosted 30 school athletics carnivals, regional/zone competitions, and Netball NSW Secondary School Competition State Pathway Matches.
The Griffith Regional Sports Centre has proven to be more than just a sports facility, with an array of other community events taking place within its walls. From the Aboriginal Medical Service Dance Camp to the Netball NSW Holiday Clinics and the ConnectYOUth Festival, the centre has welcomed a diverse range of community-focused activities including meetings of various local committees and organisations.
