Mayor Pays Tribute To Peter Bartter

Tuesday, 05 Oct 2021

Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi was saddened to hear of the recent passing of Peter Bartter, partner to the very successful Bartter Enterprises.

Peter Bartter, along with his brother David, established Bartter Enterprises in 1955 before selling the company in 2009.

Starting with just 100 chickens at the age of 18 as part of a project from the Hanwood Junior Farmer’s Association, Mr Bartter grew the company from eggs to meat production. In 1999 the Company purchased Steggles, which saw the operation became one of the largest employers in the Griffith region.

“The Bartter name is synonymous with Griffith and I don’t think it is a stretch to say without Peter and his brother David, Griffith would not be the City it is today,” said Councillor Dal Broi.

“Not only did Bartter Enterprise become one of the largest producers of chicken and eggs across our country, but the individual contributions from Peter were invaluable to our community. Peter supported Griffith right from the very beginning and was a generous man, donating to many causes including our very own Griffith Pioneer Park Museum.

“While Baiada Steggles is no longer in the hands of the family, we will never forget the foundations of the company and the immense impact it had on Griffith residents and the economy. Peter was a good man and I am deeply saddened at his passing and wish to pass my condolences on to his family and friends,” he added.
