Lake Wyangan Now At Green Alert Level
Thursday, 13 Oct 2022Griffith City Council wishes to advise that the Blue Green Algae (BGA) alert level at Lake Wyangan is now green.
This green alert level means no restrictions are in place for recreational use of the Lake, however, Council will continue to regularly monitor the level of Blue Green Algae and provide updates via the website www.griffith.nsw.gov.au.
Council’s Principal Officer, Environment, Raju Maddi said, recent work to treat the North Lake with a chemical algaecide has been a successful exercise.
“We are really happy that we’ve had a good outcome from using EarthTec™ to treat BGA,” Mr Maddi said.
“It appears that the treatment has worked and we hope that counts will continue to decline further.”
Griffith Mayor, Doug Curran said, the treatment, carried out at three sites within the North Lake in September, seems to have achieved the desired result.
“I’m really glad to see this kind of progress being made out at Lake Wyangan to tackle this major issue,” Councillor Curran said.
“Council is fully committed to finding a long-term, sustainable solution to the many issues affecting Lake Wyangan and this is a really good start.”
Sampling for algae will be undertaken twice a week, with the community updated if it drops back to amber or red alert levels.
Maintenance dosing of chemical algaecide may be required to maintain green alert levels.
At green alert levels blue-green algae are present in the water at low densities, possibly signalling the early stages of the development of a bloom, or a period where a bloom is declining. At these densities, the blue-green algae do not pose a threat to recreational, stock or domestic use.
