Councillors To Empower Women In Local Government
Friday, 26 Mar 2021Griffith Councillors Anne Napoli and Rina Mercuri have been elected to the executive committee of the NSW Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA) after they attended the ALGWA NSW conference in Shellharbour last week.
The conference, which was themed 'Women in the Know Grow', continued the work of the ALGWA, which is a national non-political organisation, founded in 1951 to encourage and support women involved in local government, both elected representatives and staff members.
This is a second term as executive committee member for Councillor Napoli, who is keen to encourage more Griffith women to consider empowering themselves and others by joining local government.
An ALGWA Candidate Information Session will be held in the Griffith Council Chambers on Saturday, 15 May 2021 from 9am -12pm.
“We invite local women who might be interested in standing for Council in the Local Government elections in September to join us and find out more,” said Councillor Napoli
“I have been a Councillor for 4 terms, and while it has been challenging at times, I enjoy having the opportunity to represent my community.
“Being on Council is more than just attending meetings, it is participating in the community, providing a voice for those who sometimes wouldn't be able to speak for themselves and it's having the chance to help grow this wonderful City.”
Councillor Mercuri said she was honoured to be elected to the Executive for the first time and looks forward to working with the other members.
“ALGWA plays an important role in developing women in Local Government and I am pleased to be part of such an important organisation,” said Councillor Mercuri.
