Local Government Week

Griffith City Council will celebrate Local Government Week with events, virtual tours and information aimed at helping the community learn more about how Council operates.

Local Government Week 2020 is being held from 3 August - 9 August 2020. This year’s theme is Councils Do and due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing restrictions, Council will mark the week a little differently.

Online Virtual Tours via Facebook will take residents behind the scenes of Council facilities to show what Council does.

The Water Treatment Plant will be featured to help residents understand more about our water supply and the operations of the site.  Other online segments will include the Griffith Visitor Information Centre, Griffith Aquatic Leisure Centre, Griffith Pioneer Park Museum, Griffith Regional Theatre, Griffith City Library and Griffith Regional Art Gallery.

Griffith Mayor, Councillor John Dal Broi, said despite the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions Council was keen to mark Local Government Week 2020.

“There are a lot of things we won’t be able to do because of the pandemic, but we still want to celebrate the week with our residents,”

“I invite residents to come down and see us at the Kiosk in Banna Avenue and to check out Facebook throughout the week.”

Council staff will wrap up the week with Council Café, an information stall in the Main Street of Griffith on Friday, 7 August from 10am to 1pm. There will be lots of great giveaways including native and herb seedlings, coffee vouchers and balloons. Residents will also find important information about major projects and much more.

If you have any feedback for us about any of the services or facilities Council provides call down to the Café, we’d love to hear from you.

Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre (GRALC) will celebrate Local Government Week by offering the following free classes:

• Monday, 3 August at 8am Gentle Aqua

• Tuesday, 4 August at 10.30am Gentle Exercise

• Wednesday, 5 August at 10.30am Gentle Pilates

• Thursday, 6 August at 8 am Gentle Aqua

• Friday 7 August at 8.30am Gentle Exercise

As Council is unable to hold any large gatherings the annual Mini Action Day won’t be held, however a resource pack has been developed and will be distributed to local primary schools. The pack features information on Council services, some activity sheets and book packs. The schools also have the opportunity to book tours for smaller, individual school groups.

Unfortunately the Annual Volunteers’ Thank You Lunch and the popular Cultural Walk have been cancelled due to COVID-19 but Council hopes to bring them back next year.
