Responsible Gambling Awareness Week will run in NSW from 16 to 22 September, encouraging people to learn more about responsible gambling and gambling harm, with Griffith, Murrumbdigee, Leeton and Naranderra teaming up to tackle the issue.

The week provides an important opportunity for the NSW community to understand the signs that gambling may be becoming a problem, and get some tips to check in on their own gambling, and the gambling of friends and family.

The week will be marked by events and activities across the state, including over 24 events supported by the NSW Office of Responsible Gambling.

Griffith City Council, Leeton Community Op Shop, Murrumbidgee Shire Council and Naranderra Shire Council are just 4 of the organisations who are funded by the NSW Government to raise awareness of gambling and gambling harm, and providing links to support services this Responsible Gambling Awareness Week.

Griffith City Council’s Community Development Coordinator, Peta Dummett said Responsible Gambling Awareness Week was the perfect time for people to reflect on gambling and learn more about how to gamble responsibly.

“With close to $19M being put through pubs and clubs across our region annually, Responsible Gambling Awareness Week is a great time to check in and start a conversation – don’t wait until they’re broke to fix it,” said Ms Dummett.

“I encourage each local community to come and talk to staff about how to keep gambling in check, and the support that we can offer. During each event we will be recruiting motivated volunteers to participate in SMART Recovery and BeSMART Facilitator training.”

“Facilitators will learn important skills for conducting gambling support groups for both the problem gambler and a group for those impacted by someone's gambling, including family and loved ones. If this is you please provided your details at any of these events or calling me on 6962 8100,” she added.

Events occurring include:

  • Griffith City Council will be holding an information and awareness session at Griffith City Library at 12.30pm on Wednesday 18 September 2019. A light lunch will be provided. Information and resources will be available at Griffith City library throughout the week starting 16 September.

  • Leeton Community Op Shop will have information available during the week at the week, and you can book in for a free luncheon and a chat on Tuesday 17 September - bookings essential on 0488 027 875.
