Amateur golfers from all over will take to the Griffith Golf Course this weekend to compete for a spot in the prestigious NSW Open Golf Championship.

Griffith is hosting the NSW Open Regional Qualifying Tournament tomorrow, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 September 2018, with Griffith City Council extending a warm welcome to the 24 golfers from as far as Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Dubbo, and Young, attempting to qualify.

Chair of the Tourism and Events Committee, Councillor Christine Stead, said the event was yet another opportunity to showcase the City.

“It is fantastic to have such an event in Griffith attracting high calibre golfers from inter and intrastate,” Cr Stead said.

“I wish all competitors the very best for a great weekend of golf and I hope they enjoy their stay.”

Griffith Golf Club Professional James Lethlean said he’s looking forward to a big weekend of golf.

Following all the weekend action, the Club will also host the Riverina Ladies Golf Open Amateur Championships from Monday 10 September through to Wednesday 12 September, with a strong field of 160 contenders from across the region registered.

“The qualifier is a big event for the Club and for Griffith,” Mr Lethlean said.

“It helps spread the word. These guys and ladies will go back and tell their friends about us.

“This is the second year we’ve held the regional qualifier and we’ve increased the numbers considerably from last year.

“The Riverina Ladies Golf Open Amateur Championships next week is their marque event.”

Griffith is one of only seven regional golf clubs selected to host qualifying tournaments this year, with other qualifiers held in Forbes, Moree, Camden, Bathurst, Thurgoona, and Nambucca Heads.
