Australia Day Weekend @ The Leagues Club

Australia Day Weekend @ The Leagues Club

Entertainment

Friday, January 24, 2020 8:30pm to Sunday, January 26, 2020 11:59pm

About

It's a sad time in Australia, the bush fires that have ravaged our country are out of control and the devastation and loss is unimaginable. We feel uneasy about celebrating Australia Day at the club considering the circumstances. So for this reason, we think it is best if we get local charities and brigades involved and use our events over Australia Day weekend as a way to raise funds and support our fellow neighbours around our country, the brave fire fighters and all affected.

The Hanwood Rural Fire Brigade will be at the Leagues Club on both Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th from 12-2pm. They will be out the front of the Southside venue with donation buckets as well as having their trucks on display for your viewing. Any donation no matter how big or small will help. We will also have donation buckets inside the club if you want to spare any change.

We will also be holding a charity sausage sizzle on Sunday 26th of January on the Alpen Terrace from 2pm. All money raised will go directly to the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Entertainment as follows, all on the Alpen Terrace over the weekend:

Friday 24th : Lolohea Brothers from 8.30pm-close

Saturday 25th : Trouserpants 8.30pm-close

Sunday 26th: DJ Vize Verza 2.30pm-6.30pm

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

Summer of the Seventeenth Doll

Entertainment

Thursday, April 30, 2020 7:30pm - 10:00pm

About

From the canefields to the city, an iconic Australian story of passion, bittersweet romance and the yearning for lost youth.

A beautifully observed, humorous and poignant play, this is Ray Lawler’s much loved tale of two Queensland cane cutters who for 16 years have worked up north in the brutal sugar cane fields and travelled back to Melbourne to meet up for five months of partying and romance with their barmaid girlfriends. But this seventeenth summer will prove challenging for them all.

A triumph at its 1955 Melbourne premiere and highly successful West End season, this 2020 production of the Australian classic, directed by award winning Denny Lawrence, celebrates the 65th Anniversary of this iconic play.

Judith Lucy VS Men

Judith Lucy VS Men

Entertainment

Friday, May 15, 2020 7:00pm - 9:00pm

About

Judith Lucy is single again…and 51.

She recently reflected on her entire history with men and concluded that maybe it was time to shut up shop. ‘Whatever it is that I’m selling, a lot of straight guys simply aren’t that interested in buying it and I’m including people like my father.’

In amongst exploring stereotypes and her own desires, Judith Lucy will recount her full history with the opposite sex and leave it up to the audience to determine whether she should ever date again.

Should Judith hang up her love-life for good?

In 2019 Judith did a massive sell-out tour around the Capital cities asking this question, but she wants a second opinion. Griffith, the decision is yours!

“If you love your comedy uncompromising, deadpan and drop-dead funny, buy a ticket.” - The Advertiser

Entertainment

Thursday, July 9, 2020 7:30pm - 9:00pm

About

WRITTEN BY URSULA YOVICH FROM AN ORIGINAL WORK BY JOSH BOND, DIRECTED BY JOSH BOND AND GAVIN ROBINS

With soaring aerial stunts this critically acclaimed work from Australia’s leading physical theatre company Legs On The Wall is a rollicking family tale of love, loss, resilience and hope.

When Ash loses his best friend Bear to suicide, he starts to idolise Vaudevillian stuntman The Great Peters, who could jump from bridges with a rope around his neck and survive. Ultimately the fabled stuntman’s death proves to Ash the trick is just that - an impossible dream to follow, waking him from a haze of grief to find his own path to survival.

Directors Josh Bond and Gavin Robins weave Writer Ursula Yovich’s words with spectacular aerial wizardry, and impressive set, video and sound design, conjuring this bold, tender and truly moving work.

Animal Farm

Animal Farm

Entertainment

Saturday, August 15, 2020 7:30pm - 9:00pm

About

BY GEORGE ORWELL

Animal Farm, one of the most enduring political commentaries, returns in a multi-award winning, critically-acclaimed theatre production. George Orwell’s intensely powerful fairy tale allegorises and satirises communist governments while illustrating with stunning simplicity how greed and power corrupts with devastating consequences to all who yield.

Revolution has taken place at Manor Farm. The pigs have assumed control and all the animals, fueled by enthusiastic camaraderie and guided by a set of self-imposed rules, are promised a better life free from the self-serving greed of humans. However, it is not long until the rules that promised equality and freedom become the shackles that bind the animals once again.

Created by shake & stir and directed by Michael Futcher, Animal Farm promises to be one of the most shocking, relevant and wickedly funny theatre events of 2020.

OPERA AUSTRALIA’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR OF BIZET’S CARMEN

Caught between her desire for love and a longing for freedom, Carmen faces an impossible choice. She’s enigmatic and elusive: a femme fatale you can’t forget. Captivating Don José with her sensual Habanera, he abandons everything to pursue her. But Carmen won’t be owned and finds herself a new lover: the dashing bullfighter Escamillo. Don José’s jealousy is untameable and in a gripping finale, Carmen is destined to fight for her life.

This new production highlights the colour and vibrancy of postcard Spain, with vintage-inspired costumes it evokes an era of bikers and shady police in a post-war setting of teen angst and rebellion.

A cast of some of Australia’s finest opera singers assemble with a chamber orchestra and local children’s chorus to perform the world’s most popular opera. Hear the famous Habanera and the Toreador Song when you join us for Opera Australia’s 25th Anniversary tour of Bizet’s Carmen.

Thursday, October 15, 2020 7:30pm - 8:30pm

About

A NEW ENSEMBLE CIRCUS CREATION, EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TRUST AND PLAY ON AN INNOVATIVE AERIAL APPARATUS.

Seven acrobats and thirty meters of rope....

Long spools of white rope run through pulley sheaves and wrap around bodies, explicitly connecting the artists’ movements above and off the ground. Like the booms and sheets of a sailing ship the performers are hoisted and swung by one another to create striking tableaux and breath-taking dynamics. The actions of one acrobat affect and implicate the movements of others in a precise negotiation of cause and effect.

By A Thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics from some of Australia’s best circus artists. With intense training in a breadth of contemporary circus disciplines, the performers have pooled their knowledge and skills, and then exploded the traditional boundaries of these disciplines to create a show where classic techniques are used in expansive ways.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
