Road Maintenance

A grader grading a road

Welcome to Griffith Road Maintenance.

This site is designed to inform you about Griffith road systems and projects.

Griffith City Council is committed to providing safe and practical road solutions for Griffith and district residents.

As the region grows, so do the demands placed on Griffith city's urban and rural transport system. This includes additional cars and increasing numbers of heavy vehicles using our roads.

Griffith City Council constantly strives to maintain, improve and upgrade current roads and plan for an expanding future.

On this website you will find information about some of these initiatives including Griffith road facts, current projects and road maintenance projects.

Unsealed Road Maintenance

Griffith City Council maintains 671.2km of unsealed roads which become potholed and corrugated over time. This deterioation is due to traffic movements and weather conditions, both wet and dry.

Roads conditions are assessed according to their safety and driveability. If they are found to be unsafe for drivers, they are scheduled for maintenance grading.

Unsealed road maintenance is done by grading, watering and compacting the road to bring it up to safe driving standards.

Griffith City Council also undertakes approximately 50km of gravel re-sheeting at an annual cost of $790,000

Other unsealed road maintenance includes the cleaning of drains, maintenance of culverts and signage.

Sealed Road Maintenance

Griffith City Council maintains 191.65km of urban sealed roads and 380.93km of rural sealed roads.

Many of the roads have been constructed for quite some time. This means the are not designed for current levels of traffic or heavy loads.

Due to this sealed surfaces are susceptible to potholing and deformation.

Griffith City Council regularly inspects these roads for defects and potholes which are repaired as soon as practical.

Sealed surfaces become brittle and require resealing on a regular basis to ensure the gravel pavements underneath are protected from the intrusion of moisture.

Annually Griffith City Council reseal bitumen roads to the tune of $900,000 which at approximately $22,000 per kilometre and covers about 37km.

Deformed pavements are rehabilitated at an approximate cost of $130,000 per kilometre.
