Griffith is renowned as being a multi-cultural city with a diversity of nationalities living, working and visiting the area, Council is conscious about promoting those ties with other countries and as such we now have three sister city relationships. These being with Communita Montana Del Grappa in Italy, Harbin in China and Fairfield City Council in Sydney.
Council is exploring the opportunities that exist for business relationships to be established in these areas, but the major focus has been on cultural experiences for community members, especially our youth. With industries in Griffith growing at a fast rate, most of our wineries and other industries are in touch with the rest of the world, but Council is still able to provide assistance when required.
The benefits of establishing Sister City relationships are many and varied depending on the city and country that the relationship is established with.
Council has three Sister Cities with links to more information below.
Comunita Montana del Grappa
The Griffith Gemmellagio Association has very close ties to the Comunita Montana del Grappa, which is an area encompassing a number of zones in northern Italy. This Sister City relationship is the longest standing relationship which recently celebrated its 25 year pact. This is an important cultural relationship for Griffith as many of our Italian migrant settlers originated from this region.
Harbin is located in northeast part of China and is the capital of Heilongjiang Province. It’s the province’s centre of politics, culture, economy, science and technology and covers a total area of 53 thousand square kilometres. The population of Harbin is 9.70 million with 3.94 million living in the urban area.
Harbin is considered a major tourist city with abundant attractions such as the largest historical museum of the Jin Dynasty, historical remains of the Huining Mansion of the Jin Dynasty and the tombs of Wanyanaguda, the founder of the Jin Dynasty. Other major attractions for the city include the annual Ice and Snow Festival with amazing sculptures displayed all over the city and on The Sun Island. Temperatures in Harbin vary from 36 degrees Celsius in summer to -36 degrees Celsius in winter.
The city has strong European and Russian architectural influences which reflect its past history and this adds to the immense beauty of the city.
Harbin is an important industrial base of China with machinery (including vehicles), electronic, food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries as its five main industries, together with the linked industries of power station equipment, measuring tools, medium and small sized ball-bearings, light alloy material, light aircraft, helicopters, antibiotic raw materials and linen textiles as its supporting parts. It's an important hub of the Eurasian continental bridge and air corridor. Five main railway lines connect and reach other parts at home and abroad and with the new airport capable of handling 6.6M people annually it has great potential for the future.
Council delegations have visited Harbin on many occasions attending the China Harbin Fair for Trade and Economic and Trade Cooperation on several occasions and a student delegation attended the Ice and Snow Festival in 2006. Council led a successful student delegation to Harbin in January 2009 and has since led the largest business delegation in June 2011.
Fairfield City Council
Fairfield City Coucnil is located in Sydney's South West and is a relatively new relationship with Griffith City Council. Fairfield City is an attractive Sister City for Griffith with the area renowned for its festivals, food and industrial parks. Griffith City Council is working with our counterparts in Fairfield City to develop mutally beneficial programs for staff, local producers and schools.
